Arabidopsis NSF 2010- Outreach program

with HALO Foundation — “Science is fun” workshop

On January 22, 2014, we hosted HALO Learning Center’s at-risk and homeless youth from Kansas City partner agencies for a “Science is Fun” workshop. The 15 youth — ranging in age from 14 to 18 — were able to experience the lab as part of an inner city youth outreach component of a grant from the National Science Foundation. The workshop centered around planting seeds which would eventually grow into a plants that the youth could keep and continue to nurture. The seeds could be planted in any shape, letter or number. The youth were able to tour the laboratory, plant room and conducted several laboratory experiments.

The HALO Learning Center is committed to improving the lives of youth in need. Our mission is to provide a safe haven that fosters education and emotional growth, while equipping at-risk youth with the skills needed to become contributing members of their communities. HALO works with at-risk youth from age five, until they become contributing members of their communities, usually around age 25. HALO partners with eight local organizations that provide basic needs for at-risk youth, such as food, water, clothing and shelter. HALO fills the gaps in our partners’ resources by offering future-focused programs to engage the youth and help them dream about their futures. These diverse programs include art therapy and vocational training. To learn more about the HALO foundation, visit their website [Link] and the event Facebook page [Link].
